Course Description :

The course provides an intensive investigation into contemporary English sentence structure, function, and meaning. It also analyzes how structure types and sentence relationships are realized in various texts and genres. In addition, the course discusses issues relative to descriptive/prescriptive approaches to language.

Course Objectives :

• To describe general characteristics of Standard English syntax
• To develop students understanding of how English language is structured, organized, and analyzed
• To heighten student awareness of the difference between prescriptive and descriptive approaches toward grammar
• To become more competent in talking and thinking about language
• To encourage students learn to think critically and analytically about English grammar
• To help students gain enough grammatical competence to check the effectiveness of and react to the sentences other writers/speakers compose
